An Exercise To Take Control of Your Life
By Tony Neate

This exercise can be done with any person, situation or negative state of mind.  It is non-judgemental, seeking no blame.

It enables you to deal with feelings of disempowerment and release them from yourself, so that you can gain control of your life.  The exercise is in two parts, A and B, which can be practised simultaneously.

A.   Find a comfortable chair and spend a few minutes relaxing your physical body, breathing in deeply in a relaxing and easy rhythm.

1.       Visualise (imagine) two circles that are joined together, horizontally or vertically.

2.       Place yourself in the one nearest to you, and surround yourself in your favourite colour.

3.       Place the person, situation or negative state of mind, in the other circle and surround him, her or it, in a colour of your choice.

4.       Now imagine you have a laser beam that you can direct and control with your mind. Trace the laser beam round the circles in a figure of eight, completing it 9 times.

5.       Do it at least twice a day until the circles begin to part

6.       Continue doing this until the circles have naturally parted and stay apart.

B.   Write a letter to the person, situation or state of mind (in the case of a person, not to send) in which you express fully what you feel on every level.  It is helpful to include 10 good things and 10 not good things, and it is important that the letter contains all that you want and need to say.  You may wish to write it over a number of days or even weeks, adding to it as your thoughts and feelings arise.

When completed, find a quiet, private place and prepare to read it out aloud.   As you do so, use your physical body as strongly as you can to express any anger or frustration – stamping and waving your arms and fists, and banging on a cushion if you wish – getting it right out of your system on all levels.

When you have read it out aloud three times and feel that you have really released all stuck and not-OK feelings - burn it!
